SAFETY MAINTENANCE TIPS
SMOKE DETECTORS
- Press the test button monthly for each smoke detector to verify the alarm is functioning.
- Change the batteries every 6 months.
- Make sure there is a smoke detector within 10 feet of every bedroom and at least one
installed for each level of the home.
CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
- It is strongly recommended to have a carbon monoxide detector installed near the bedrooms
for any home with a gas heating system or water heater. Carbon monoxide is an odorless,
tasteless poisonous gas that can kill you. Its sources can be from cracked heat
exchangers in gas heating systems, vented gas appliances that are not drafting
properly or any gas motor.
- Press the test button monthly for each carbon monoxide detector to verify the alarm
is functioning.
- Change the batteries every 6 months.
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
- It is strongly recommended to have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and garage.
- Check the indicator on the pressure gauge every 6 months to be sure the extinguisher
is charged. Recharge or replace the fire extinguishers if needed.
- Make sure the lock pin is firmly in place.
DRYER DUCTS
- Dryer ducts should be checked periodically for lint buildup and cleaned out if needed.
Excessive lint buildup in the dryer duct could cause a fire.
- Any plastic dryer ducts should be replaced with solid smooth metal ducts for fire
safety reasons.
